Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis has been used since ancient times and is perhaps the oldest known “technique” of therapeutic change.
While experts still debate how and why hypnosis works the fact is that entering the hypnotic state seems to allow problematic thoughts, feelings, and behavior to be more easily modified. This state is actually something each of us has experienced several times each and every day: watching a movie, daydreaming, long-distance driving, and entering that calm state of relaxation just prior to falling asleep. The most common experience client’s report from their hypnosis session is it being “dream-like” with feelings of calm and relaxation.
What should you expect in a hypnotherapy session?
Generally, counseling sessions using hypnosis are more behaviorally focused than with traditional “talk” counseling. For me, talk therapy tends to work “top-down” while hypnotherapy works “bottom-up”. You should expect each session to consist of about thirty minutes of discussion; to assess where you are in the process and to find out what is working and what we need to be modify. Sessions are generally closed with about fifteen-minute hypnotherapy where we introduce verbal suggestions and imagery inferred from the talking portion of the session.
